Ivandić on punishment: We will wait for the citizens to establish the infrastructure

    adminBy adminOctober 2, 2022No Comments5 Mins Read

Marina Ivandić (Možemo) and Mario Župan (HDZ) spoke in the TNT duel about the new waste separation model in Zagreb.

“We have before us a process of fine-tuning that model, we have to cover a lot of ground, find optimal models with the tenants that suit them as well. For some neighborhoods, where there is not a lot of space, we are trying to find even more optimal ways”, said Marina Ivandić.

The application started yesterday, it is to be expected that people have started filling ZG bags, he adds.

When we provide underground storage, says Mario Župan, then we can have bags. He states that in some parts of the city, Trešnjevka, Novi Zagreb, Dubrava, waste was not removed on time, that is, until October 1.

“The citizens were confused. The idea of bags was not well communicated at the beginning”, he claims.

He adds that in some European cities, such bags are bought through utility companies and that there must be information about the person who bought the bags. He also cites the example of Brussels, where the price of 15 bags of 60 liters is around HRK 19.

Ivandić answers that the law, based on the European acquis, stipulates that there must be a fixed part of the price that must be fixed for everyone. That fixed part of the price should make up the cost of the service of removal and disposal of recyclable waste, he says.

He emphasizes that everyone can go to the recycling yards as much as they want and it is encouraged. People do not perceive that place, as he states, as important for maintaining order and cleanliness. He says that the campaign will continue in October to encourage citizens to come to the recycling yards and they will be entitled to free bags.

Ivandić: If you have less waste, you will pay less

“The fairness of this model lies in the fact that mixed municipal waste is transported through bags, and if you have less waste, you will pay less. It is important that everyone knows how much waste they produced and how much this service cost them,” claims Ivandić.

The mayor points out that no one is against bags, but the method of recording, and that with this method they only got bags and increased the price, and the same waste ends up in Jakuševac.

“We don’t reduce the amount of mixed municipal waste, we pack it in one bag and we pay for the service,” he says.

Ivandić replies that the point is to make the system fairer for those who separate, so that people who work hard pay less. He adds that another issue is the construction of infrastructure and that work is being done on it.

“Of course we will do that part, it is the obligation of the city. With this decision, we had to comply with the law and now we had to determine the fixed and variable part of the price. “Zagreb is the champion among the biggest cities, it has made the biggest step forward,” he emphasizes.

The mayor says that everyone agrees on how waste should be disposed of, but that those who separate will be held responsible if someone was irresponsible and put the wrong bag in the container.

Ivandić claims that this will not be the case, but will wait for citizens to establish infrastructure in multi-apartment buildings in order to be able to implement that decision. He believes that this pressure had the effect that the representatives of the tenants began to come forward to solve the problem if they have tanks on public areas.

“That pressure encouraged people to ask themselves where their bins are, to show interest”. He adds that there will be warnings, but the goal is not punishment.

The mayor commented that not everyone is equal because the center is only at the expense of the City of Zagreb, while in other parts the representatives of the tenants have to provide the contractors themselves and pay for them themselves.

“Boxes cannot come into the city center due to conservation protection, it is not an option to put above-ground tanks there,” answers Ivandić.

HDZ is preparing a model for waste separation

We have to solve, the Župan points out, the waste from the doorstep. It states how each separation model can be upgraded or reverted to a better one.

“HDZ will come out with a model by or after the new year. We will build underground tanks if we are able to in all parts of the city of Zagreb”, he says.

He states that they supported that the containers are a good idea, that the infrastructure should be built, that the waste should be removed on time,… “but if the records are not coordinated, I guess you don’t mind an inspection coming and inspecting the bags”, said Marina Ivandić.

To which she replied: “I guess we proved it by pouring 40 liters of water into the bag.”
