The president of the Reformist People’s Party, Radimir Čačić, said on Saturday that he is convinced that the party will retain its parliamentary status in the next elections for the Croatian Parliament, and accused the HDZ of trying to maintain an unconstitutional electoral model at the national level.
“We have never had a particular ambition to significantly go beyond the framework of our basic voter base, which is the north of Croatia. The emphasis is, of course, on the position of Varaždin County and our position in that county,” said Čačić in Varaždin, where the party held a session of the Central Committee.
He added that they are the strongest party in that county, along with the HDZ, which is also shown by the number of councilors in the Assembly.
“The strength of the HDZ can be compared with us, for example in the County Assembly and in terms of percentages and everything, they have 12 councilors, and we have nine. However, they have that number with HSLS and HSU, so what is there somewhere”, stated Čačić, adding that the goal is to maintain such a position.
He accused the HDZ of trying to maintain an unconstitutional election model at the national level.
“The votes of the citizens of Slavonia are worth up to one third more than the votes in other parts of Croatia, including us, against which they are worth at least 15 percent more than our votes. We have such a disproportion in the electoral system and I don’t know how they will try to keep it since it is unconstitutional, it will not work,” said the Reformist president.
He added that he will respond to any election model with force in the north of Croatia. He maintains that their mandate in that region is unquestionable and that they can start fighting for another one, but also that they are open to trying to win a few more seats in other parts of Croatia in partnership with other parties, without specifying which ones.
Inflation causes social stratification of society
Čačić mentioned the difficult position of Croatian citizens when inflation and the increasing cost of living are taken into account as one of the most important topics of today’s Central Committee. He believes that inflation of a nominal 12.8 percent affects the social stratification of society, where pensioners are the most vulnerable.
“We know that especially for pensioners, who are the most vulnerable, this represents an additional push into a part of the poverty area. This is where we reach the poverty line for over 30 percent of Croatian citizens,” Čačić opined.
He also believes that continuous criminal affairs contribute to the bad state of society, as well as that there are no control mechanisms in society that would reduce this crime.
“This is not just any crime, but the crime of networked party state structures of the party in power and its partners. Of course, this should be opposed at all levels,” Čačić asserted.
At the session of the Central Committee of the party, one of the points was the expansion of the national presidency, where new members were co-opted at the suggestion of the party president: Željko Bedeković, Robert Hirtz, Krešo Komljenović, Tomislav Paljak and Vesna Sabolić.
