The forecasters of the State Hydrometeorological Institute (DHMZ) have issued a red warning for the Velebit Channel and an orange warning for the Dubrovnik region and the area of Kvarner and Kvarnerić for Saturday and Sunday, the Directorate of Civil Protection announced on Saturday
For Saturday, a red warning has been issued for the Velebit Channel due to the wind, as a strong storm is expected during the night with the strongest wind gusts of 35-75 knots (65-140 km/h).
The weather is very dangerous and implies a high level of danger to health, even life-threatening situations, especially for seafarers. There is also a significant risk of damage to the coastal infrastructure.
Citizens are advised to be aware of the dangers, pay attention and follow the latest weather reports, as well as to avoid traveling and staying near threatened coastal areas.
It is very likely that the ferries will not sail, so if they travel, citizens should follow the traffic information.
An orange warning has been issued in the Dubrovnik region due to locally possible heavy rain. Local torrential and urban floods are possible, and the possible amount of precipitation is 60-100 mm.
Citizens are advised to be prepared to protect themselves and their property, as flooding of property and the transport network is possible. It is also possible to interrupt the energy supply, the communication network, as well as the water supply. Driving conditions can be dangerous due to reduced visibility and skidding on wet roads.
In the area of Kvarner and Kvarnerić, an orange warning has been issued due to a strong, sometimes very strong storm at night with the strongest wind gusts of 35-55 knots (65-100 km/h).
Citizens are advised to expect and be prepared for gale-force wind speeds combined with locally high waves that have already or will be generated.
Managing a vessel in these conditions requires extensive experience and adequately equipped vessels. It is recommended that sailors without adequate experience seek a safe harbor before the onset of potentially dangerous wind and waves.
It is likely that many catamarans and ferries will not be sailing, so if people are traveling, they should follow traffic information.
For Sunday, a red warning was also issued for the Velebit Channel due to the wind. A strong and very strong storm is expected in places, which will weaken slightly towards the end of the day. Strongest wind gusts 35-75 knots (65-140 km/h).
An orange warning has been issued for the area of Kvarner and Kvarnerić. A strong, in places and very strong gale is expected, which will weaken slightly towards the end of the day. Strongest wind gusts 35-60 knots (65-110 km/h).
Citizens are advised to follow the weather reports of DHMZ on possible sudden weather changes and to check the condition of the roads on the website of HAK.
