The County State Attorney’s Office in Split, after conducting an investigation, indicted three citizens of the Republic of Serbia (1966, 1964 and 1965) for war crimes against prisoners of war.

The indictment charges the 56-year-old with having acted contrary to the Geneva Convention on the Treatment of Prisoners of War, the Geneva Convention for the Protection of Victims of Non-International Armed Conflicts, and several supplementary protocols, and the supplementary protocols the 58-year-old and the 57-year-old also ‘bypassed’.

The indictment states that from September 29, 1991 to November 2, 1991 in Knin, during the armed conflict between the armed forces of the Republic of Croatia and armed aggressor Serbian paramilitary units, the so-called SAO Krajine, as a member of SUP Knin, was assigned to secure captured members of the MUP of the Republic of Croatia in the hospital in Knin.

“In violation of the rules of international law during the armed conflict, he tortured prisoners of war, and after four captured and wounded MUP members were brought to the hospital in Knin (1969, 1967, 1967 and 1969), 56- among other things, the year-old physically and mentally abused the first by beating him with the butt of a rifle all over his body and head, forehead, nose, and between his legs. He is accused of physically abusing the second and forcing the third to drink hot water, threatening to kill him if he did not do so. He beat the fourth member with a stock, looking for the places where he was wounded,” the indictment states.

In addition, the 56-year-old is accused of allowing other people to come into the room where the wounded prisoners were lying and abusing them.

The second defendant, a 58-year-old man, is accused of failing to prevent prisoners of war from being tortured in his capacity as the warden of the District Prison in Knin, violating the rules of international law during the armed conflict, while the third defendant, a 57-year-old man, is accused of torturing prisoners of war as a prison guard. After two captured members of the MUP of the Republic of Croatia were brought to the District Prison in Knin from the hospital in Knin, the 58-year-old, knowing that the prison guards subordinate to him, including the 57-year-old, physically and mentally torture and abuse the captured members of the Croatian of the police did not do anything to prevent and punish such illegal actions.

He is accused of having consented to his subordinates continuing with illegal actions and their consequences, and the 57-year-old is accused of personally physically beating the captured first member (in 1969), causing him physical injuries.

In the indictment, it was proposed that, after the confirmation of the indictment, that proceeding be combined with the proceeding based on the confirmed indictment against the second defendant and the third defendant for the criminal offense of war crimes against prisoners of war from Article 122 of the Basic Criminal Code of the Republic of Croatia, and that the defendant be tried in absentia , it says at the end of the ŽDO Split press release.
