Hollywood stars will gather tonight at this year’s Emmy television awards, where the tense drama “Legacy” and the South Korean sensation “Squid Game” will compete for the main prize.
The competition is strong, say awards experts, partly because many series and stars have returned to the screens after the coronavirus pandemic prevented them from being produced last year.
“Legacy,” the HBO series starring Brian Cox as the patriarch of a family fighting for control of a media dynasty, is the favorite for best drama, helped by the fact that it has collected 25 leading nominations. This series has an Emmy in that category from 2020.
The new series “The Squid Game” could win, and if it succeeds, it will be the first time that a non-English-language series has won this award.
The series, in which people fight for life and death with the promise of possible riches, became a worldwide phenomenon after it debuted on Netflix last year.
However, one should not rule out possible surprises, according to experts.
The series “Severance” of Apple’s television platform has recently attracted the attention of many in Hollywood. Other contenders include Netflix’s “Ozark” and AMC’s “Call Saul,” which voters could reward for their final seasons.
The series “Ted Lasso” (Apple TV+) is in the race for the award for the best comedy, which was nominated again after winning in this category last year.
This year, it will compete for the award with Hulu’s “Just Murder in the Building,” starring Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez, and ABC’s “Abbott Elementary,” set in a predominantly black school in Philadelphia.
Colleagues Short and Martin will compete for best actor in a comedy, along with “Lassa” star Jason Sudeikis. Contenders for best actress in that category are Quinta Brunson, 32-year-old star of the series “Abbott Elementary”, actress Issa Rae of the series “Insecure” and Jean Smart of the series “Comedians”.
Zendaya’s “Euphoria” star and Reese Witherspoon’s “The Morning Show” star will compete for best actress in a drama. Cox will compete for best actor in the same category with co-star Jeremy Strong from “Legacy” and Lee Jung-jae from “Squid Games.”
HBO’s series “White Lotus,” about wealthy visitors and workers at a luxury resort, is the favorite for the award for best short series.
