This month, footage of a new Grand Theft Auto game surfaced in an online forum dedicated to the game series. The US developer Rockstar Games has been silent so far, the authenticity of the leak has been discussed. In a new statement on social media, however, the studio has now confirmed the hack.
Disappointment at Rockstar Games
Editor’s recommendation
“We recently suffered a network intrusion in which an unauthorized party illegally entered our systems and downloaded confidential information,” the developers said. According to Rockstar Games, data from the planned next ‘Grand Theft Auto’ part has been captured. The images that the anonymous hacker spread on the Internet are therefore real and come from the early stages of development of the sequel to ‘Grand Theft Auto 5’ (2013).

Rockstar Games clarified their disappointment but expressed their confidence: “Our work on the next ‘Grand Theft Auto’ will continue as planned. We remain as committed as ever to bringing you a gaming experience that truly exceeds expectations. We will keep you updated and of course give you a proper introduction when the game is finished.” No further problems are to be expected: “We currently do not expect any interruptions in our live game services, nor any long-term effects on the development of ongoing ones projects,” the statement clarifies. Nevertheless, Rockstar Games thanked the fans for their support in the current situation – the leak is considered the largest in the studio’s history.
Leak confirms fan theories
The leaked material shows different stages of development of the new game. Although the new ‘Grand Theft Auto’ part is not ready yet, the hack confirmed fan theories that Rockstar Games had been silent on until now. The hacker’s 90 files showed, among other things, Miami-based Vice City as the game’s setting. The gameplay also features the playable main characters: a woman named Lucia and a man named Jason, linked in a story based on the crime duo Bonnie and Clyde. This will make the upcoming ‘Grand Theft Auto’ game the first in the series to feature a female protagonist in 25 years. The hacker also announced that it would be able to publish more material. Among other things, he wants to own the source codes of the new game and the direct predecessor. Rockstar Games did not respond to this threat. Meanwhile, the original platform also removed the leaked files for copyright infringement.
Rockstar Games officially announced the new part of the action series in February 2022. A title has not been determined, but the game has been known as ‘Grand Theft Auto 6’ at the latest since the leak. Nothing is known about a possible release date.
