Many use the weekend to catch up on what there was no time for during the working day: household chores, attending events – video games. The game platform Steam probably broke the record for the most users logged in at the same time on Sunday.
Steam for the first time with over 30 million users at the same time
Editor’s recommendation
According to the company’s own statistics page, over 30 million users were online at the same time yesterday in the Valve client. The external site SteamDB even recorded around 11,000 more users with 30,032,005 people. Either way, Steam broke its own record from the beginning of the year: At that time, 29.2 million users represented the top. Of course, that’s not the number of people who actually played actively, but their peak of 8.5 million people is impressive.
Since the beginning of the pandemic and the associated lockdowns, Steam has unsurprisingly been more popular than ever. The latest numbers clearly top the 2017 peak of 15 million simultaneous users. So it’s no wonder that the platform launched in 2003 has been the most popular for some time compared to the Playstation Network, Xbox Live or other stores like Epic.
Put together a monthly active user comparison chart based on Steam’s new report.
• Steam’s MAUs were higher than PlayStation’s year-end numbers
• Steam grew by 12 million MAUs in 2021Note: PSN MAUs from 2017 weren’t reported, and Epic Games Store released in December 2018. pic.twitter.com/uqa9MIMF0w

Most played game: ‘Counter-Strike: Global Offensive’
14 years for the first 15 million, five for the next – PC gamers are on the rise. And what are they playing? Perennial favorites on Steam are, for example, the shooter ‘Counter-Strike: Global Offensive’ (577,000 players – at the weekend the record was 1.05 million simultaneous players) and the multiplayer arena game ‘Dota 2’ (366,000 players – Sunday peak : 750,000 people). ‘PUBG: Battlegrounds’, ‘Lost Ark’ and ‘Apex Legends’ are also very popular at the moment. ‘Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare II’, out this week, is currently dominating the sales charts.
Games like these attracted an average of 132 million monthly players to the platform in 2021. For 2022, the numbers will probably be higher – and with the upcoming holiday season, Steam may break its user record again.
