‘The Witcher’: CD Projekt Red announces remake

From Poland to the whole world: ‘The Witcher’ has found its way into the hearts of quite a few fantasy fans in recent years. The series about the witcher Geralt von Riva, conceived by Andrzej Sapkowski, first attracted attention as a book, then as a video game and, for several years now, as a Netflix film adaptation starring Henry Cavill. Less well-known are a Polish film adaptation, a pen and paper role-playing game, comics, a card game and a musical. Especially the third part of the game series, ‘The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’ (2015) achieved mainstream status, receiving countless awards as the best game of the year. The Polish game developer CD Projekt Red had already started with the game adaptation in 2007… and just in time for the 15th birthday of the classic, a remake of ‘The Witcher’ was announced.

CD Projekt Red asks for your patience

Editor’s recommendation

“The game that started it all is being built from the ground up,” announced CD Projekt Red. According to the studio, the new version of ‘The Witcher’ should work in the Unreal Engine 5. The remake of the role-playing game is being worked on with the Polish developer Fool’s Theory, which now employs a number of people who were previously involved in the ‘The Witcher’ games. CD Projekt Red promises “full creative oversight” of the project, which is currently in an early stage of development. CD Projekt Red also confirmed that the reboot was previously being worked on under the codename ‘Canis Majoris’ – the title was first dropped in early October. Nevertheless, the studio puts the brakes on fans: “It’s still early days and we want to make sure that the game is created with the utmost care and attention to detail,” it said. “While we’re excited to share this news, we ask for your patience as it will be a while before we can reveal any details about the project.”

Chief developer in nostalgic anticipation

In addition to the press release, chief developer Adam Badowski also said: “It all started for CD Projekt Red with ‘The Witcher’. It was the first game we ever made, so it was a big moment. Going back there and recreating the game for the next generation of gamers feels just as big, if not bigger.” He promised that everyone involved knows the material well and understands the importance of the remake for game fans. “I know the game will be worth the wait,” he concluded.

‘The Witcher’ series: A total of five more games in planning

Five new games were recently announced in the ‘The Witcher’ universe. Among them was also a completely new trilogy. So far all games have code names, with the unveiling of ‘Canis Majoris’ the first one has now been aired. There isn’t really any more information about the remake. Neither gameplay adjustments nor the scope of the open world system or possible multiplayer elements are known. CD Projekt Red only published a flame-filled image with the announcement. Fans are speculating that the remake will be released in 2025, after the game codenamed ‘Project Polaris’. This should be out in two years. Also, console gamers are hoping for the first ‘The Witcher’ game to be made available for their platforms for the first time.
